Beatrix Potter Made by Hannah for Jake

Hannah and Jake

Hannah Working Hard

Hannah decided to make a baby quilt for the youth minister's first baby. The mother selected Beatrix Potter as the nursery theme and green as the color. Also the baby was announced as 'male' so that eliminated a lot of the pinkish-type Beatrix Potter animals.

Frances helped us find the fabric "Mr. Gentleman Fox' on the Internet. I also bought a couple of the coordinating fabrics to use. The fabric was a striped panel of pictures from the book. The width of the stripe dictated the size of the blocks. Ann and Hannah chose a pattern from Mother's file. There was no name on the paper picture they found, but I think it is 'Disappearing 9-Patch' and I think Frances brought us the pattern. So, I sketched out how to use the pictures on the fabric and the coordinating fabrics with this pattern. The big pictures turned out to be 5" squares and the little ones 3" squares. That made the coordinating fabrics 3 x 5 inch rectangles.

Hannah set to work cutting out the blocks one day when she could come down from school. Then, she came another day and assembly-line sewed all the blocks together with Mother and me feeding her the pieces and pressing the results. Finally, I quilted it on the long arm and Mother bound it. Hannah made the label for it and on Thanksgiving it was delivered to Baby Jake and his family. It was well received.
