Moon Over the Mountain—QAYG (New Technique)

In May I took a PQG workshop to learn how to do quilt as you go (QAYG). The workshop was taught by Carol Stapleton. The pattern I selected was a traditional appliqué block called “Moon Over the Mountain”.  People in the sewing group I attend think the quilt looks “Japanese” and call it Mt. Fuji and Full Moon. Go figure! The gold squares in the corner are the “pop” of color and are part of the instructions from the class.
  • 32" Square. Table topper size.
  • Quilting: Quilted on the domestic machine using a walking foot.  Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Dark grey and black mottled print from my inventory.

Twists and Turns

This quilt was made to use up some fabric (Layer Cake and Fat Quarters), to have a project to take to a sewing group I recently joined, and to have a quilt to donate to Life Moves through the Quilt Guild. The pattern came from the book Skip the Borders by Julie Herman. She calls the pattern “Four-Patch Shift.”
  • 63 1/2" x 82" Twin bed size
  • Quilting: Quilted in a meandering loose stipple with design in the 4-patch. Used light gray 100% polyester thread (Omni from Superior Threads-named "Silver"). Free form quilting. 7 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Blue print fabric from a Connecting Threads sale. Fabric was bought some time ago and never looked pretty enough for a back. However, it washed and dried beautifully and did not require ironing. I’m sorry I did not use the back sooner.
  • Batting: 80% cotton/20% polyester Winline “Comfort Blend”
  • Binding: Light gray solid cotton from my inventory.
  • Pattern: "Four-Patch Shift" by Julie Herman from her book Skip the Borders.
  • Piecing by Patty
  • Pinned into frame May 8, 2019. Quilting on long arm quilter May 10, 2019. (Patty).
  • Binding by Patty.
  • This quilt is self-certified. QC by Patty.

Donna’s Christmas Log Cabin

  • Size:  86 1/2" x 91 1/2"  Queen bed size.
  • Quilting: Quilted in loose free form stipple, with 5-pointed stars in the center of log cabin blocks. Used variegated red/white/green 100% polyester thread (Omni-V from Superior Threads-named "Silent Night"). 9 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Strips of red print, green print, red, green, white diagonal strip, green print, and red print. I tried to get some of red print on both ends, but either my measurements or my calculations were off. The last red strip will be cut off entirely.
  • Batting: 100% cotton, Warm and Natural. Batting supplied by Donna
  • Piecing and design by Donna. Center part of log cabin 4 1/2” wide by 4” long. Therefore, blocks are slightly wider than long. Quilt is 8 blocks wide and 9 blocks long.

Donna’s Christmas Star

Donna sent a few Christmas quilt tops, batting, and backs for me to quilt for her. This is the first one, a big Christmas star. I chose a gold colored thread because there is a lot of gold in the fabrics. The gold thread was really pretty on this one. I was happy with the choice.

  • Quilting: Quilted in a loose stipple. Used gold-colored 100% polyester thread (Omni from Superior Threads-named "Goldenrod"). 8 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.

Sharon’s Tulip Beds and New Technique

Still Smiling!

The new technique was setting blocks on point and making the half-square and quarter-square triangles to do so. The top Sharon sent was made by her Great Aunt Delia. However the blocks were put together quickly and the top was not flat. So, I had to unsew all the blocks and sashing and border and re-sew to make a flat top that I could quilt. Sharon also sent 3 extra blocks that Great Aunt Delia had raw edge machine quilted to make the quilt queen-sized. To extend the quilt I had to set the blocks on point and make the triangle pieces to set the blocks correctly, a new technique for me! I used the extra blocks like a border at the top. To make the quilt wide enough I bought a print that had diamond designs that coordinate with the on point blocks. After the quilt was made bigger, I had to buy a wide back for it. I found the perfect color and springy print with little chickies from fabric.com. Overall, the quilt has a springy look. The colors are bright and pretty.

The quilt fabric is in good condition. I didn’t find any major stains, just a few barely noticeable water marks. Whoever stored the top all these years took good care of it. Great Aunt Delia, very resourcefully, used wax paper as stabilizer for the machine quilting. I had to pick out chunks of it. I hope that Sharon will use it every day. It’s too pretty to store any longer.

  • Size:  93" x 101 1/2"  Queen bed size.
  • Quilting: Quilted in a combination of loose stipple and spirals in the borders and sashing. Quilted in a combination tight stipple and spirals in the background of the tulips. Did not quilt the tulips so they can “pop” a bit. Used off-white 100% polyester thread (Omni from Superior Threads-named "Pearl White"). 16 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Turquoise print wide back from fabric.com. The print has little chickies and flowers.
  • Batting: 80% cotton/20% polyester, Comfort Blend from Winline
  • Machine appliqué and layout by Aunt Delia. Top border and side panels added by Patty.
  • Pinned into frame March 8, 2019. Quilting on long arm quilter March 11-23, 2019. (Patty).
  • Binding by Patty. Used a piece of plain, turquoise from Always Quilting store.  Binding turn down done by hand.
  • Like Boeing makes airplanes, this quilt is self-certified. QC by Patty!

,
To complete the design because there is no side border fabric at the top of the quilt and to apologize to Sharon for taking so long with her quilt, I made some pillow cases. I didn’t have enough fabric to make 2 pair, so I made 3 pillowcases! How lame is that?

In January I volunteered to quilt a top for the guild. Someone donated the top and I finished the quilt to be donated to Shelter Network. The top is a beauty and i can’t believe someone gave it away. It’s red, white, and blue with a blue piano key border. Simply gorgeous! I also did the binding.

  • Batting: 100% cotton from the guild
  • Binding:  Dark blue solid cotton from my inventory.
