Star Baby Quilts for Donation

I made 2 baby quilts based on a pattern I saw on the internet “When You Wish….” from Bon Jour Quilts. The quilts were made from half square triangles using fat quarters from my stash. I would have preferred to use all batiks or all regular fabrics, but I didn’t have enough bright fabrics of either kind, so I used a mixture. The quilts were quilted on the domestic machine using the walking foot in close parallel lines as the designer suggested in the pattern. For the second one I used slightly wider spacing because the first quilt seemed too stiff. Both quilts have flannel backs.

First One

• 36 3/4" x 36 3/4" Baby size
• Quilting: Quilted on the domestic, following the pieced design to emphasize the star. Used golden colored 100% cotton thread (Aurifil).  Quilting by Patty.
• Backing: Flannel. Yellow Ombré flannel from a Quilt in a Day sale
• Batting: 80% cotton/20% polyester. “Comfort Blend” from WinLine.
• Binding: Golden yellow tonal cotton print from my stash.
• Pattern: "When You Wish …..” by Bon Jour Quilts from the internet.

• Batting: 80% cotton/20% polyester. “Comfort Blend” from WinLine.
• Binding: Purple batik cotton print from my stash.

Two Baby Quilts (One for Charlotte and the Other for Chloe)

Using a Layer Cake from my stash, I made 2 baby quilts. One was to be for the Red Egg and Ginger party for Landy’s new granddaughter, Charlotte, and the other was to be for donation. However, I soon learned that Cousin Kristi has a new granddaughter, Chloe Sofia, so the second one will go to the new cousin. I used an internet pattern I used before in January 2021 “Always Sunshine and Silver Linings”, to make a quilt for Kristi’s granddaughter Grace. The internet patterns are by Amy Smart and are called “Easy DIY Star Baby Quilt Tutorials”. I made the same one I used for Grace “Morning Star” for Charlotte and the second one “Lone Star” for Chloe so she wouldn’t be too matchy with her sister Grace. Both quilts were quilted on the domestic.

“Our New Star” for Charlotte

“Year of the Rabbit” for Chloe

Chloe and I share a Chinese Zodiac year. This is “our” year. And the back is a rabbit print, so the name seems obvious.

Two Neonatal Quilts (Both PIGS)

These quilts were both quilted on the domestic and they both came from the To Do list (PIGS). The aqua one emptied the PIGS bag but for the blue and yellow one enough material remains to make another baby quilt. The pattern is a simple sewing together of squares from charm packs for both quilts. These quilts were made as my “ticket” into the guild’s Alice Love event in March.

Aqua Neonatal Quilt

• 37" x 46 1/2" Neonatal size
• Quilting: Quilted stitch in a ditch on the Viking Machine and in an arching concentric pattern starting in one corner. Used aqua 100% cotton thread (Aurifil). Quilting by Patty.
• Backing: Dark blue flannel sloth print left from Zoo Crib Quilt, August 2022.
• Batting: 100% cotton
• Binding: Aqua print from Patty’s inventory.
• Pattern: 5” charm squares sewn together
• Piecing by Patty.
• Quilting on domestic machine January  8, 2023. (Patty).

Blue and Yellow Neonatal Quilt

• 36 1/2" x 45" Neonatal size
• Quilting: Quilted about 1/2” away from each side of the ditch on the Viking Machine. Used medium blue 100% cotton thread (Aurifil). Quilting by Patty
• Backing: White and blue print from the same fabric line as the squares, Sunshine & Dewdrops. All fabric from a MSQC sale.
• Batting: 100% cotton
• Binding: Medium blue print from same fabric line as the charm squares.
• Pattern: 5” charm squares sewn together
• Piecing by Patty.

• Make a donation quilt.
• Make an already purchased quilt kit.
• Make 2 neonatal quilts for the guild. Quilt on the domestic. The quilts will come from the To Do list and should be completed in January to meet guild deadline.
• Try a new technique. Consider English paper piecing, needle-turned appliqué, or free-motion quilting on the domestic machine. Consider this a fun project.
• Do the already purchased class from Crafty Gemini—curved piecing.
• Only buy fabric to finish quilts, such as backs and bindings. Otherwise, use what is already in my inventory.

2023 Outlook

I feel like I need a break from quilting, so I’ll keep my goals modest this year..

2022 Year-End Report

• Completed 12 long-armed quilts, including 4 baby quilts, 1 quilt for Aunt Linda, 3 quilts for Aunt Joyce, 1 for Monika, 1 for Mother and Sally, and 2 for donation. One of the donation quilts was a kit and so was the 1 for Monika. One of the crib quilts was a PIGS from the To Do list. In addition, I quilted 6 doll quilts on the domestic. Goal exceeded for long armed quilts and quilting projects. 
• I did some tidying and cleaning in the sewing room. Goal met.
• I did do crafting using clothesline which qualifies as a new technique. Goal met.
• I used fabric from my inventory, though I did to buy some for the crib quilts Goal mostly met.
• I did not finish the Crafty Gemini class. Goal not met.
• In addition, I made 22 bags, 20 tote bags and 2 yoga mat bags, for friends and family using fabric from my inventory. And I made a bowl, placemat, and coasters from clothesline. 

My quilting goal for 2022  was  exceeded.   One goal was not met. The rest of the goals were  met.  The bags were a bonus achievement. I give myself an B for 2022. 

Rope Craft

Sew Creative Lounge sent me a kit to make a fabric rope bowl. I have the Nancy Zieman book about making things from clothesline and I watched her program about it. So it’s been a craft on my radar for some time. Turns out it’s fairly easy to do. But what do you do with the finished bowl? I decided it was a good place for N’s collection of lens cleaners.

Coaster for Narinder

Made 5 coasters for Eirin as a hostess gift. She invited Lee and me to a lunch at her house.

I followed the instructions but it turned out too long and narrow. My hands are too tired and sore from wrangling stiff clothesline to add more rows.

I now retire as a clothesline crafter, as well as San Carlos bag lady.

Aunt Linda’s Quilt for Leslie

This quilt was designed by Leslie. She selected the fabric and planned the layout. Surprising to me, the quilt has borders on 3, not 4, sides. One of the long sides has no border. At first I thought she designed the quilt for a day bed, but Aunt Linda said “no”. I guess Leslie likes asymmetrical designs. So do I.

• 63” x 77" Single bed sized
• Quilted in vertical waves alternating with loop-de-loop lines. Used tan brown thread “Sandstone” Omni brand 100% polyester from Superior Threads. Free form quilting. 6 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.
• Backing: A beautiful pink flower print, supplied by Aunt Linda.
• Batting: 80% cotton/20% polyester “Comfort Blend” by Winline.
• Binding: To be done by Aunt Linda
• Pattern: Designed by Cousin Leslie

Doll Blankets

I made doll blankets for Paisley’s and Quinn’s baby dolls or stuffed animals. I made Paisley a paisley one to match her name and a zoo one to match the quilt I sent her baby brother Chauncey. For Quinn I made 2 blankets that match the quilts for her “butters” (her term for the expected boy twins) and a paisley one because it is such cute fabric. All the blankets were quilted on a domestic machine, Janome heavy duty, using the thread that matched the binding. All the blankets had 100% polyester batting left from Aunt Joyce’s blue and white quilts.

For Paisley

Same fabric, back, and binding used for the Zoo Crib Quilt made in August in 2022.

Used an Elegance charm pack from Missouri Star Quilting Company. The charm pack has some cute paisley prints. The backing was a matching paisley print also from MSQC. The binding fabric was a dusty pink fabric from my stash.

For Karina

I made a blanket for friend Eirin’s granddaughter Karina. Karina has “stuffies” not dolls, so I made the blanket wider. I used a pastel charm pack from my stash, leftover polyester batting from Aunt Joyce’s blue and white quilts, light pink grunge print binding, and a pastel unicorn print backing left from Dani’s quilt Catch Your Dreams (see July 2019).
