As Time Goes By (Spinning Rails)

The Label

The name comes from a British TV program that Mother, Daddy and Sally enjoy watching on PBS.

Size: 90" x 90" Double-bed size
Quilting: Loopy design using light beige thread (Omni from Superior Threads).
Backing: Multi-colored cotton print, purchased at a red tag fabric sale. Mother knows how to pick the best bargains!
Batting: 80% Cotton 20% Polyester (Warm and White)
Binding: Red-brown plain fabric
Pattern: Spinning Rails from Fons and Porter Quilting July/August 2004
Piecing begun 2004-2005 by Mother. Quilting on long arm quilter April to May, 2012 (Patty) Binding by Mother. QC by Spencer. This one took a while to bind, because we had other projects including house guests.

I have included several example blocks in order to admire the range of scraps. Some came from Penny's family and some from dresses Mother made Tata and Auntie Bernice.

Grandma's Boy

A quilting scene-

Suzanne, a friend from work, requested a quilt for her soon to arrive first grandchild--a boy to be named Cole. So, I set to work on the project at the conclusion of the baby quilt donation project. To keep Suzanne informed about my project I posted updates for her on Facebook. I will include those 'photo journalism' pictures here too.
1. Select the pattern-

2. Select and purchase the fabric-

3. Preshrink and iron the fabric-

4. Cut the pieces according to pattern directions-

5. Oil and set up my old sewing machine 'Caruso'. It has the best stitch and 1/4" mark of any sewing machine-past or present.

6. Sew pieces together-

7. Measure the completed top to determine dimensions for the back and batting. Rule is top dimension + 8".

8. Sew the quilt back and measure and cut the batting-

9. Assemble the ingredients on the long arm machine-

10. Mount the quilt, batting and backing and quilt the sandwich-

11. QC the quilted sandwich-

12. Trim off the excess batting and back-

13. Sew on the prepared binding and label using the modern machine with a walking foot-

14. By hand, sew down the edge of the binding and 2 sides of the label-

Size: 44" x 52" Baby Size
Quilting: Meandering, loopy or oscillating design appropriate for each section (4 bobbins) using blue thread on top and light yellow thread on the back (Omni from Superior Threads).
Backing: Yellow print fabric that matches the sea print on the front. Had to use a section of the front print to have enough for the back.
Batting: 100% Cotton (Warm and Natural)
Binding: Green batik that is also sashing stripes on the front.
Pattern: From "French Braid Transformations" by Jane Hardy Miller. Pattern called 'Stax'. I loaned the book, but I will add a picture of it once it's returned.

Inclusions

This is the last in the baby quilt donation project. The pattern was adapted from one of my favorite quilting books "Sunday Morning Quilts". The authors called it 'Daydreams', but I called mine 'Inclusions' because it reminds me of rock inclusions. It's a good word because it has a legal, mathematical (set theory), and a scientific meaning as well as geological. I quilted this one as the designer describes in the book. I rather liked the quilting design.
I figure if you make several of the quilts in a book (such as this one and the Fons and Porter book I described in previous posts) then the price of the book was worth it. I love the title of the book; by itself it sounds cozy before you even look at the quilts.
Size: 48" x 55" Baby Size
Quilting: Loopy, crisscrossing, figure-eightish pattern (3 bobbins) using bright blue thread. Also one bunny. Free form quilting.
Backing: Bright green-colored flannel
Batting: 100% Cotton (Warm and Natural)
Binding: One of the printed flannels used for an inclusion in the quilt.
Pattern: "Sunday Morning Quilts" called 'Daydreams' in the book

Nap App

The next one in the baby quilt donation project. This one uses more of the printed flannels that we bought plus black and white flannels and a woven heart design flannel in the border.
This one reminds me of the app icons on a smart phone, hence the quilt name. I used a pattern from a book and a strip piecing technique that made the checkerboard pieces go together fairly easily, though not perfectly. The pattern came from the same book pictured in Carnival Midway.
Size: 46" x 58" Baby Size
Quilting: Meandering design with a bunny in the corner (3 bobbins) using light gray thread (Omni from Superior Threads). Free form quilting.
Backing: Woven heart design flannel used in the border.
Batting: 80% Cotton 20% Polyester (Warm and White)
Binding: Several of the flannel prints used in the quilt
Pattern: From Fons and Porter 'Easy Quilts'; a pattern called 'Checkerboard Twist'

Carnival Midway

The next one in the baby quilt donation project. This one uses more of the printed flannels that we bought plus a couple of fat quarter flannels that Narinder's nieces, Simran and Megha, brought me when they visited in mid-March.
This one reminds me of the pennants that fly on a carnival midway, hence the name. I used a pattern from a book and made a template from the diagram in the book. The template worked very well; I was pleased how easily it went together. I made the quilt smaller than the book described to make it more baby-sized and added borders to make it less square.
Size: 52" x 57" Baby Size
Quilting: Crisscrossing, figure-eightish pattern with a bunny in the corner (3 bobbins) using white cotton thread. Free form quilting.
Backing: White flannel
Batting: 80% Cotton 20% Polyester (Warm and White)
Binding: One of the flannel prints in the quilt
Pattern: Modified from Fons and Porter 'Easy Quilts'; a pattern called 'Lizzy's Parade'

Don't let the '31 Projects to make in a weekend or less' on the front cover fool you. All of the quilts in this book take more time than normal people have in a weekend.
