Green, Tan, and Brown Stripe

This is another of the cotton double knit fabric whole cloth quilts. This one used a green, tan and brown striped knit. The back is a baby block print that was bought at a JoAnn's red tag sale. All of the same issues applied to quilting this one as I described for the first. The binding is dark green plain cotton. This quilt was added to the donation box.
Size: 46" x 61" Baby or Lap size
Quilting: Meandering design using light tan 100% polyester thread ('Light Tan' Omni from Superior Threads). 3 bobbins.
Backing: Multi-colored baby block print cotton.
Batting: 100% Polyester
Binding: Dark Green plain cotton
Pattern: Whole cloth.

Green Diamonds on a Yellow Field

This is another of the cotton double knit fabric whole cloth quilts. This one used a yellow background with green diamonds knit. The back is a green dotty flannel. All of the same issues applied to quilting this one as I described for the first. The binding is plain green cotton. This quilt was added to the donation box.

Quilting: Meandering back and forth design using dark green 100% polyester thread ('Palm Tree' Omni from Superior Threads). 2 bobbins.
Backing: Green dotty flannel.
Batting: 100% Polyester
Binding: Dark green cotton
Pattern: Whole cloth.

Red, White, and Blue Stripe Quilt

This is another of the cotton double knit fabric whole cloth quilts. This one used a red, white and blue striped knit. The back is a plain blue flannel. All of the same issues applied to quilting this one as I described for the first. The binding is the blue flannel back brought around to the front. This quilt was added to the donation box.
Size: 57" x 76" Single Bed size
Quilting: Meandering design using blue 100% polyester thread ('Ocean Blue' Omni from Superior Threads). 4 bobbins.
Backing: Blue flannel.
Batting: 100% Polyester
Binding: Blue Flannel, back brought around to the front
Pattern: Whole cloth.

Cabbage Patch

The Entire Set for Cousin Sharilyn's Granddaughters

This is the last quilt for Aunt Janet's great-granddaughters. It's for the third child, Kimberlyn. Though, Ann warns, and I suspect she is correct, that who gets which quilt will shuffle when they see them. That's the way it was with her and her sisters growing up.
The fabric for the nine patches mostly came from Mother's stash. Some of the nine patch fabric came from the other quilts in this set. This means that this quilt has some of the same DNA as the others, as do sisters! The background is unbleached Quilter's muslin from The Laurel Leaf fabric store in San Carlos. The yellow print for the inner border came from the stash we got from Sari and binding came from Mother's stash. The light green accent fabric came from a Connecting Threads sale. The green color is called "Mint". The back came from a JoAnn's red tag sale. I took Cynthia (dog walker) to the DMV to get her handicap sticker after her broken ankle accident, so I just had to go to JoAnn's (nearby) while she waited at the horrendously busy DMV. Whilst browsing JoAnn's, I found the "perfect" back. It was fate, so I had to get it.
I quilted the outer border using a four-leaf clover design from a homemade pantograph. The inner border was a flower and leaf design using a pantograph that came with the machine. The main quilt was a free- form loopy meander with big "cabbage roses" in the plain muslin squares.
This pattern is one that Mother and I have long admired in the book Joy of Quilting. It's also in Eleanor Burns' book Still Stripping. We used the block size in Eleanor's book, but copied the look of the quilt in the other book. Of the quilts in this set, Ann says it is her favorite because of the green color and the sweet old fashioned look. Ann likes traditional things.
Size: 62" x 79" Single-Bed Size
Quilting: Meandering loopy design and free form "cabbage roses" using light green polyester thread (Omni from Superior Threads-named "Sea Mist") in the main quilt. Flower and leaf design using a pantograph in the inner border. Four-leaf clover design in the outer border using a homemade pantograph. 9 bobbins. Same light green thread was used in both borders.

Batting: 50% Polyester/50% Cotton (Warm Blend)
Binding: Green cotton print from Mother's stash
Pattern: "Breakfast in Bed" by Joan Hanson & Mary Hicks in The Joy of Quilting book. It's a very traditional pattern.

QC Guy Obscuring Brown Bird
This is fourth quilt in the set for Aunt Janet's great-granddaughters, but the third one to be pieced and quilted. It's for the expected baby girl due in May.
I found the pattern on line from a web site called "Cluck, Cluck, Sew". I changed the appliquéd flowers and added the brown bird. Daddy insults me by calling the brown bird a buzzard; I think it's a brown towhee. The pieced blocks went together very smoothly. The pattern instructions are excellent.
I quilted fluffy clouds and wispy lines to represent breezes (think Mother West Wind and the Merry Breezes, Sally's favorite book series when she was a little girl) using the long arm. I also quilted around the bird and flowers and the signature rabbit using the long arm. I basted the entire quilt on the long arm. Then I quilted the fence a la "in the ditch" using my domestic. It's much easier for me to quilt straight lines on the domestic. Basting on the long arm worked very well. I will use this "trick" for my next hand quilting project.
Size: 47" x 51" Crib Size
Quilting: On the long arm--Clouds and a loose loopy pattern in the sky using light blue polyester thread (Omni from Superior Threads-named "Harbor Sky"). Quilted around the appliquéd bird and flowers. Quilted a signature rabbit. Basted the rest of the quilt. 2 bobbins. On the domestic sewing machine--Quilted fence by stitching in ditch using 100% cotton machine quilting thread, white in color. Used dual feed foot (walking foot). 2 bobbins.
Backing: Plain blue flannel, triple brushed, very soft. Used a new flannel blanket.
Batting: 50% Polyester/50% Cotton (Warm Blend)
Binding: Blue cotton print from Mother's stash
Pattern: "Daisy Gate" by Allison R. Harris from Cluck, Cluck, Sew. Bird appliqué from free Internet pattern. Flower appliqués made using Accu-Cut Go dies.

Side-by-Side Dog and Cat

This is second quilt in the set for Aunt Janet's great-granddaughters. It's for the "pupple" girl who likes soft animals.
The plain lavender for the sashing came from Mother's stash. The purple prints for the triangles in the blocks and cornerstones came from The Laurel Leaf fabric store in San Carlos. The background for the appliquéd dogs and cats is a confetti print also from The Laurel Leaf. The purple print used for cornerstones was used for the binding.
The appliqué was quite a challenge. It took about 30 minutes for each block. I made an extra dog and cat so I could pick the best for the quilt. The tilted blocks went together very well and were fun to do, using the instructions for the pattern.

Size: 61" x 72 1/2" Single-Bed Size
Quilting: Meandering design (loose stipple) using purple polyester thread (Omni from Superior Threads-named "Purplelicious"). Quilted around the appliquéd animals giving them what I call "auras". Free form quilting. 7 bobbins. Used every bit of the bobbin thread.
Backing: Light purple cotton print from a JoAnns sale
Batting: 50% Polyester/50% Cotton (Warm Blend)
Binding: Purple cotton print also used in the cornerstones

The name comes from the poem The Duel by Eugene Field (1850-1895) about the gingham dog and calico cat. It's a bit violent and probably NOT considered a children's poem these days, but it is one I recall from my childhood.

Spring Hearts

Because we made a quilt for Aunt Linda's great-granddaughter, Marley (see Four Hooties), we decided to make quilts for Aunt Janet's 3 great-granddaughters. Later we learned a fourth is expected in May, so that keeps us busy! It took us quite a while to agree on patterns and sizes. I talked to Aunt Janet and found out the eldest, Jaycee, likes pink, the second, Alana, likes "pupple" and soft animals, and it's anyone's guess about the third, Kimberlyn. The only thing known about the soon expected baby is that it's a girl.
The pink and red scraps for the hearts came from Mother's stash and from mine. The background is unbleached Quilter's muslin from The Laurel Leaf fabric store in San Carlos. The pink print for the border and binding came from Mother's stash--it's the scraps from a Tata blouse; the red print for the border came from mine. This border red print was also used in the Four Hooties.
