Aunt Linda’s Christmas Quilt

Aunt Linda sent a queen bed sized quilt top and back that she pieced from Christmas fabric. Overall, the quilt is gorgeous!

The quilting was delayed by my Covid and Covid rebound illnesses. But, finally, I got it started.

The thread kept breaking at first which I attributed to the metallic printing on the backing fabrics. I switched to a larger, titanium coated needle and the problem was solved.

The back was built from squares of fabric, sashing, and cornerstones. It measured square, but the bottom back did not turn out as even as I would have wanted. I need to study about longarming with built backs.
  • 70” x 80" Queen bed sized
  • Quilted in wavy lines to resemble hanging boughs (garlands or swag) used for Christmas decorations. Used light tan thread “Light Tan” Omni brand 100% polyester from Superior Threads. Free form quilting. 11 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: A built back made from large squares of fabric with sashing and cornerstones. The backing was supplied by Aunt Linda.
  • Batting: 100% cotton “Quilter’s Dream Cotton Select” by Quilter’s Dream.
  • Binding: To be done by Aunt Linda

Diwali Table Runner

This is my last attempt at flange binding. I am going back to regular binding after this, even if I have to spend time basting it!

The internet says Diwali colors are red, yellow, blue, and magenta. I put the squares in a box, mixed them up, and pulled at random to make the rows. Surprise! The random draw worked out!
  • 16 1/2“ x 60 1/2”
  • Quilting: Quilted stitch in the ditch. Used goldenrod 100% cotton thread (Aurifil). Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Dark blue and aqua geometric (circles) print from Patty’s inventory.
  • Batting: 100% cotton. Quilter’s Dream Cotton Request, thinnest loft.

Day of the Dead Ofrenda Runner

I saw cute skull planters containing succulents for Day of the Dead at Trader Joe’s. They were so cute I had to buy a few. I came home and in my e-mail was a video from Misty at MSQC about a cute one day project for an ofrenda table runner. Ha! The one day project was 4 good days of work. But the result was cute.

I tried a flange binding for the first time, with acceptable but not great results. I’ll try again.

Aunt Joyce’s Cars and Trucks Quilts

Aunt Joyce sent flannel backs for the Dinosaur Quilts, but they were a skoosh too small for me to use. So, I used some sale flannel from JoAnn’s and the flannel backs she sent and turned them into their own quilts. The flannel she sent was printed, one with racing cars and one with trucks and construction vehicles. The combination of flannel back and top with a thin cotton batting makes for a very toasty and cozy quilt. There was enough of the printed flannel left to make a pillowslip for each print.

Racing Cars Quilt
  • 61” x 78" single bed size
  • Quilted in slightly wavy crisscrossing horizontal lines. Used bright red  thread “Neon Red” Omni brand 100% polyester from Superior Threads. Free form quilting. 6 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.

Construction Vehicles Quilt
  • 61” x 78" single bed size
  • Quilted in slightly wavy, variably-spaced vertical lines, with occasional circles and occasional very wavy lines. Used bright orange  thread “Orange Glow” Omni brand 100% polyester from Superior Threads. Free form quilting. 5 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.

Aunt Joyce’s Quilt for Sharon

Cousin Sharon married, so Aunt Joyce decided to make her a quilt. This is a quilt  project Tata handed Aunt Joyce when she was first empty nesting. Many years later Aunt Joyce completed it. Because Aunt Joyce’s eyesight is not the best, the quilt had areas to mend and because it was paper pieced, there was a lot of paper to remove. Though, after it was finished, the quilt is a beauty! I hope Sharon enjoys using it.

The quilt is king bed sized so it was a lot to quilt and a bit unwieldy to handle. However, it quilted beautifully. I even rotated it so I could quilt it in both directions. Aunt Joyce sent some fabric she’d purchased for drapes for the back that Mother pronounced too heavy. When I told Aunt Joyce that Mother vetoed her backing fabric, Aunt Joyce gave me permission to change it. Apparently the big sister card still works after all these years! Mother is 93 and Aunt Joyce is 87! And the backing I selected, wide bleached muslin quilted beautifully. Hooray for the big sister card!

Aunt Joyce sent fabric for the borders. The borders squared up the quilt and really made it possible to longarm it. Frances was here and helped with measuring and figuring out how to do the borders. Thank-you Frances!
  • 99 1/2” x 99 1/2" King bed sized
  • Quilted in vertical and horizontal parallel waves. Remounted the quilt to achieve this feat! Used off-white thread “Pearl White” Omni brand 100% polyester from Superior Threads. Free form quilting. 12 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Wide bleached muslin.
  • Batting: 100% polyester “Quilter Dream Puff”. I thought the quilt needed more puff, that’s why I used a polyester batting with more loft (3/4”)
  • Binding: Solid royal blue fabric, cut on the bias. Aunt Joyce wanted bias binding to wear better. I hope I did a good enough job with the mending of the top so the quilt will live up to Aunt Joyce’s expectations of wearability. Some of the fabrics in the quilt don’t look that sturdy. One part of a block just disintegrated when I was looking at it, so I had to re-do several pieces with new fabric. Because the binding is bias and the quilt is so big I had to turn the binding by hand. I’m a very slow hand sewer so the binding process took many days (10).
  • Pattern: Pattern given by Aunt Ruby to Tata who handed it down to Aunt Joyce.
  • Piecing by Aunt Joyce using paper piecing on newsprint type paper.
  • Pinned into frame May 16, 2023. Quilting on long arm quilter May 18-20, 2023. Turned and remounted quilt May 22, 2023. Quilted the other direction May 22-24, 2023 (Patty).

Two Dinosaur Quilts for Aunt Joyce

Aunt Joyce is making quilts for her great grandchildren. She has 26 going on 27 of them! I agreed to quilt and bind some of them.

These 2 quilts were made with a digitally printed panel and wide borders. The panel really pops and the borders coordinate beautifully. The backs she sent were a bit too small, so I’ll use those backs for 2 more quilts.
