Proof of Concept—Reproduction of a Vintage Quilt

From the Pop-Up Quilt Show
Mother and I have admired this pattern for a long time. We want to make one using her scraps. However, Mother thinks 2” finished squares are better than the 1 1/2” ones in the pattern. So, this quilt was put together as a “proof of concept” for the 2” squares. I used 2 jelly rolls to make it, really 1 jelly roll and a few strips from the second one.

I worked on this quilt at the Pop-Up show that the guild held at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds. Many people wandered through our work area. The gentleman were very interested in the old Singer Featherweight machines many of us were using. Sadly, they were not as admiring of the old quilters operating the machines!

Dynamic Duo

This is the second quilt Frances finished during her visit. This quilt is similar to one Mother made in 2016, named “Spice”. See this blog for September, 2016. It is named for the Dynamic Duo who made it, Frances and Mother. The differences between this quilt and “Pinal Peaks”, the first quilt Frances finished are it is one block longer and the set in triangles that finish the sides are dark red and not brown. On Aug, 19, 2019 given to Zebiba Ahmed who was Mother’s best caregiver after she broke her arm and neck.
  • 65" x 84" Twin bed size
  • Quilting: Quilted in a meandering loose stipple. Used dark red 100% polyester thread (Omni from Superior Threads-named "Cranberry"). Free form quilting. 6 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Light pink print fabric from Mother's inventory. Bought from a fabric.com sale.
  • Batting: 100% cotton Winline “Back to Basics”

Pinal Peaks

QC by Rowan
This is another quilt made from Mother’s strip scraps. Mother and I started it and, thankfully, Frances visited and finished piecing it. This quilt is similar to one Mother made in 2016, named “Spice”. See this blog for September, 2016. The name comes from the similarity of the blocks to “peaks” and from the Pinal Mountains, which were near to Superior, Arizona where we lived for many years. Also, “Pinal Peaks” is alliterative. On Aug, 19, 2019 given to Zebiba Ahmed who was Mother’s best caregiver after she broke her arm and neck.
  • Size: 64 1/2" x 77 1/2" Twin bed size
  • Quilting: Quilted in a meandering loose stipple. Used brown 100% polyester thread (Omni from Superior Threads-named "Milk Chocolate"). Free form quilting. 6 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Multi-colored print fabric from Mother's inventory. Bought at a JoAnn's sale.
  • Batting: 100% cotton, Winline “Back to Basics”
  • Binding:  Solid brown cotton from Mother's inventory, also used for the set in triangles that finish the sides.
  • Pattern: "Spice Market" by Vicky Wozniak from a McCall's advertisement.
  • Piecing by Mother, Patty, and mostly Frances Worth
  • Pinned into frame November 16, 2018. Quilting on long arm quilter November 20, 2018. (Patty).

Blue Line—Flannel Quilt

This quilt was made from scraps left from backs of quilts. Most of the quilts were the ones I made for Narinder’s neices and nephew (see Dorm Series, November, 2016), plus one made for Cynthia (see A Breed Apart, July, 2017) and one made for Nancy (Nancy’s Quilt, March, 2018). There were 8 different backs to use. Most of the flannel strips were trimmed from the edges after the quilts were quilted. All, but one, of the scraps, were neutral or dark in color. So, I used the one bright aqua one as a feature down the center of the quilt. The result is a handsome and humorous quilt top, I think. Mother thinks it’s hideous, but she’s blind. Whatever you think about the quilt’s “look”, it will be cozy and warm for someone in a homeless shelter. I wanted to name the quilt “Blue Streak,” but the urban dictionary gives a nasty definition for that phrase, so I decided on the more acceptable “Blue Line”.  This quilt was donated to victums of the Camp Fire that destroyed the town of Paradise, CA. The donation was handled by the Quilt Guild.
  • Size: 60 1/2" x 96” Twin bed size
  • Quilting: Quilted in an overall vertical wavy line. I saw a picture on the internet of a strip quilt quilted this way. It’s a modern quilt look. However, it was very boring to quilt after the first 2 lines. I will never ever do this again! I’ve had my “modern” moment.  Free form quilting. Used blue variegated 100% polyester thread (Omni-V #9006 from Superior Threads-named "Laguna") for the blue line (1 bobbin) and  6 bobbins of light gray Omni 100% polyester (“Silver”). On the top used gold Omni 100% polyester  (“Goldenrod”). Top thread color chosen to match the binding color. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Gray tonal flannel print backing from a Fabric.com sale.
  • Batting: 80/20 cotton/polyester. Winline “Comfort Blend”.
  • Piecing by Patty.
  • Pinned into frame October 24, 2018. Quilting on long arm October 26, 2018. (Patty).
  • Binding by Patty. Used a solid gold cotton fabric from my stash for the binding.
  • QC by Spencer. This quilt is good colors for him. I should make him one.

Oliver’s Big Fish—New Technique

This is a quilt made for Cousin Leslie’s new grandson Oliver. The new technique was making an applique pattern from a clip art picture and using Misty Fuse instead of Steam-2-Seam Lite. This was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I would never have made it through the process without advice from Cousin Denise. She clued me in on selecting a piece of clip art and taking it to a copy store to be blown up the size for the quilt. I found Office Depot to be the best place for enlargement. I had 2 copies made per her instructions. Misty Fuse was hard to use, but the product is less stiff and has a better hand feel than a raw edge applique made with Steam-2-Seam. Finding all the fabrics for the applique was difficult, also. The background (“ocean”) was a jelly roll race quilt. The quilt would look better with some seaweed in the blank spaces (Hannah’s suggestion) but I ran out of gas for the project, so the quilt did not get seaweed corners. Oliver comes from a family of fisher-people. I hope he likes his big fish.
  • Size: 50 1/2" x 65” Crib size
  • Quilting: Quilted in an overall wavy line to represent water current with occasional free form fish. Quilted around the big applique fish. My rabbit signature was a poor imitation of Kenojuak’s (Inuit artist) “Rabbit Eating Seaweed.” Free form quilting. Used blue variegated 100% polyester thread (Omni-V #9006 from Superior Threads-named "Laguna"). 7 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Gray tonal print backing from a Superior Threads end of bolt sale. The fabric is really nice.
  • Batting: 100% cotton, Winline “Back to Basics”
  • Piecing and applique by Patty. Background is a jelly roll race quilt using a Kona Cotton Jelly Roll called “Overcast”.
  • Pinned into frame October 13, 2018. Quilting on long arm October 15, 2018. (Patty).
  • Binding by Patty. Used a dark gray print from a JoAnn’s sale.

Sally’s Cousin Quilt

About to Go Under Longarm Needle
The Short Cousins made blocks in 2011 so that each one of us could have a Cousin Quilt. Each cousin selected a theme and color scheme. Sally asked that each Cousin simply recreate the block they made for their own quilt for her quilt. Therefore, her quilt is quite a selection of colors and themes. There are 12 cousins minus Guy. Sally never completed her Cousin Quilt because there wasn’t a block for Guy. This year I decided to make a block for Guy and complete the quilt. Guy likes desert tortises, so I made a turtle block for him. One of the memories from my youth was going on a trip with Uncle Vaughn and family. We had to stop a lot so Guy could rescue desert tortises that were getting too close to the road. That’s why I made the gray corner—to represent the road. I also remember Guy feeding prickly pear fruit to the tortises he collected, so I added a “tuna” to the block. I bought the pattern that I used to make the tortise from an internet web site. To make a quilt with 13 blocks I added a plain block between the Cousin blocks. The plain blocks were made with fabric Sally selected for the back. Hopefully the quilt will be big enough for Sally’s antique 3/4 bed (it was Tata’s bed when she was a girl).
  • Size: 75 1/2" x 75 1/2" Double bed size for a bed with a footboard and head board.
  • Quilting: Quilted in an overall meander, loose stipple in the plain blocks, a spiral design in the sashing, and around the designs in the Cousin blocks. Free form quilting. Used cream 100% polyester thread (Omni from Superior Threads-named "Cream"). 7 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Gray tonal print backing from my inventory.
  • Batting: 100% cotton, Winline “Back to Basics”
  • Piecing by Short Cousins, assembly by Patty
  • Pinned into frame August 10, 2018. Quilting on long arm quilter August 10-17, 2018. (Patty).
  • Binding by Patty. Used the same plain gray that was used for the sashing, fabric from my inventory.

Aunt Joyce’s Heirloom

Halfway Done
Aunt Joyce asked me to complete this heirloom quilt top. The blocks were embroidered by Uncle Don’s Aunt Delia. Aunt Joyce sewed the blocks together with a bright pink sashing. She did quite a job engineering the design to fit the bed. The sashing is different widths to make the blocks fit the bed perfectly and the bottom corners are cut off so they won’t drag on the floor when the quilt is used on the bed. Aunt Joyce wanted polyester batting so that the quilt would be puffy and imperfections in the sashing will show less. I hope she allowed for the puff when she engineered the sashing. Width and length is lost to cover the height of the puff. Knowing Aunt Joyce, she probably figured on that “shrinkage”. This top was difficult to quilt because there was a lot of stopping and starting. After a couple hours of quilting I was exhausted. So it took longer to quilt than a lot of my recent quilts.
  • Size: 103 1/2" x 94 3/4" before quilting. 100” x 90” after quilting. Queen bed size.
  • Quilting: Quilted feathers in the wider sashing and leaves in the narrow sashing. Quilted around the embroidery and followed the printed blue dots in the blocks. Quilting was not continuous so there are lots of thread ends to bury, i.e. the quilt is very “hairy”. Used off-white 100% polyester thread (Omni from Superior Threads-named "Pearl White"). 15 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Plain white wide backing From a fabric.com sale. Aunt Joyce sent a backing, but I was afraid the weave would allow the polyester batting to “beard”, so I used my wide white backing that is a tighter weave.
  • Batting: 100% polyester, Hobbs “Poly-Down”, Premium Polyester.
  • Embroidery by Aunt Delia, sashing by Aunt Joyce
  • Pinned into frame July 25, 2018. Quilting on long arm quilter July 25-August 8, 2018. (Patty).
  • Binding by Patty. Used a piece of plain, dark rose from a Quilt in a Day sale.  Binding was made on the bias, per Aunt Joyce’s request to Mother; also bias will look better with the angled off corners. Binding turn down done by hand.
