Mug Rugs

I decided to make mug rugs for Miff's church's craft faire. It's a fun project. I'm trying to get 36 ready for her sale.

I completed and shipped 40 mug rugs of various designs seen above.

Many Steps to the Sewing Machine

Mother completed this quilt top and another like it 12 years ago. She wants it quilted on the diagonal as shown in the magazine where she got her inspiration for the quilt. The best way to do diagonal quilting for a queen sized quilt is by hand, so the quilt has waited for many years for us to nerve up to the project. I decided to baste it in the long arm and that was completed in July. Now as soon as I finish the mug rug project I will start the hand quilting. I hope I can get it done in the next 12 years!

This is a very old pattern called "Many Trips Around the World." Mother saw it in a magazine and decided she wanted to make it. She made two-this yellow one and one with blue accent color. The magazine was American Patchwork & Quilting from August 2001(just before the World Trade Centers were brought down on 9/11).

Size: 83" x 94" Queen-Bed Size
Quilting: Basted in the longarm. Quilting by hand diagonally through the blocks.
Backing: Plain orange-yellow cotton from Laurel Leaf. It takes 8 yards for the backing.
Batting: 100% Bamboo. Ann and I bought it from a vendor when we attended a San Mateo quilting event in February. It was the event where we found the case for Hannah's graduation present sewing machine. It is such a soft batting it is easy to hand quilt.
Binding: Print from Mother's stash; rusty red background color.
Pattern: Antique "Many Trips Around the World"
Piecing by Mother 12 years ago. Pinned into frame July 17, 2013 for basting. Basted on long arm quilter July 17-29, 2013 (Patty). Started hand quilting on August 8, 2013. Finished April, 2014--8 months later! Binding by Mother. QC by Spencer.

Holiday Table

This table runner was started to practice utility quilting using perle cotton thread. I started it in a hoop, but finished it in the new PVC quilting frame. I wanted to practice with the frame before I started hand quilting the queen size 'Many Steps to the Sewing Machine.' I liked using the new frame.

The fabric for this runner was purchased from a JoAnn's sale. Since the runner was started a couple years ago, it qualifies as a finished UFO for our yearly goals.

This runner was added to the donation box.

Size: 12" x 60"
Quilting: Hand quilted using perle cotton, called 'utility quilting'
Backing: Holiday print - birds, poinsettias, Christmas theme
Batting: 100% cotton-Warm and Natural
Binding: Holiday print- trees, fall theme
Pattern: 9-patch and plain blocks, my design

Gold Is Where You Find It (aka Missing Piece)

This is the mother of all UFO's (un finished objects). I started the blocks 30+ years ago when I was a lowly chemist at Syntex. The design is my own, a basic 9-patch with a 'missing' triangle randomly placed in each block, hence the name 'Missing Piece'. Because I used a gold colored fabric for the missing piece, the title soon morphed into 'Gold Is Where You Find It'. I used the latter name for the quilt for donation purposes, but in my heart it will always be the 'Missing Piece'. The fabrics were from Mother's stash 30+ years ago. We even recognize fabrics that mother sewed whilst we were living in Superior! Every five or so years I'd get these blocks out and arrange them. It always look so ugly to me, I'd put the blocks away again. At some point I arranged and numbered their placement; that's the arrangement I finally used. About 2 years ago I bought neutral-colored material for sashing and a gold print for the back. Then a few weeks ago, I decided to bite the bullet and finish the quilt. Much to my surprise the quilt looked okay, even good. I think the neutral sashing brightens it up and makes it look, well, almost pretty. When I measured the sashed quilt, I decided it was too big for a single bed and a bit small for a double bed, so I added the brown print border (fabric from my stash) to make it double bed sized. I used a plain dark brown cotton for the binding, also from my stash.
I always look at quilts for "opportunities for improvement" next time. This quilt shows how far I've come in 30 years. It makes a good benchmark for me.
The quilt will be given to a woman who lost everything in a recent apartment fire in Redwood City. Mother found out about her through her friend at church.
Size: 75" x 86" Double-Bed Size
Quilting: Meandering design (loose stipple) using light tan polyester thread (Omni from Superior Threads-named "Light Tan"). Free form quilting. 6 bobbins.
Backing: Gold-colored cotton print
Batting: 50% Polyester/50% Cotton (Warm Blend)
Binding: Dark brown plain cotton
Pattern: My own design; traditional 9-patch with a twist
Piecing by Patty 30+ years ago. Pinned into frame July 8, 2013. Quilting on long arm quilter July 8-10, 2013 (Patty). Binding by Patty. QC by Spencer.

County Fair

The Fair

Reviewing the Posters
This quilt was started as a demonstration for the San Mateo County Fair. I used jelly rolls purchased from Connecting Threads. The quilt blocks were easy and fast to cut out and it went together smoothly and quickly. For the fair, I also prepared posters about the various ways a quilt can be put together (battings, bindings, quilting methods) and magnetic boards so the folks could practice arranging blocks. Unfortunately not many people attended (most went to the free concert), so the posters and boards weren't used very much.

The fabric came from purchased jelly rolls in an 'Americana' theme supplemented with some fabric from my stash. The backing came from a Connecting Threads sale. The same fabric used for the backing was used for the binding. I quilted the entire quilt using a star pantograph that came with the longarm machine. The pattern for the quilt is one that I found on the Internet. I forgot to capture the information about the designer or her web site. The design looks a bit like the Equality sign used by Marriage Equality supporters. Auspiciously, I finished quilting this one on the day the Supreme Court allowed gay marriage to happen again in California!
