Sharon’s Tulip Beds and New Technique

Still Smiling!

The new technique was setting blocks on point and making the half-square and quarter-square triangles to do so. The top Sharon sent was made by her Great Aunt Delia. However the blocks were put together quickly and the top was not flat. So, I had to unsew all the blocks and sashing and border and re-sew to make a flat top that I could quilt. Sharon also sent 3 extra blocks that Great Aunt Delia had raw edge machine quilted to make the quilt queen-sized. To extend the quilt I had to set the blocks on point and make the triangle pieces to set the blocks correctly, a new technique for me! I used the extra blocks like a border at the top. To make the quilt wide enough I bought a print that had diamond designs that coordinate with the on point blocks. After the quilt was made bigger, I had to buy a wide back for it. I found the perfect color and springy print with little chickies from fabric.com. Overall, the quilt has a springy look. The colors are bright and pretty.

The quilt fabric is in good condition. I didn’t find any major stains, just a few barely noticeable water marks. Whoever stored the top all these years took good care of it. Great Aunt Delia, very resourcefully, used wax paper as stabilizer for the machine quilting. I had to pick out chunks of it. I hope that Sharon will use it every day. It’s too pretty to store any longer.

  • Size:  93" x 101 1/2"  Queen bed size.
  • Quilting: Quilted in a combination of loose stipple and spirals in the borders and sashing. Quilted in a combination tight stipple and spirals in the background of the tulips. Did not quilt the tulips so they can “pop” a bit. Used off-white 100% polyester thread (Omni from Superior Threads-named "Pearl White"). 16 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Turquoise print wide back from fabric.com. The print has little chickies and flowers.
  • Batting: 80% cotton/20% polyester, Comfort Blend from Winline
  • Machine appliqué and layout by Aunt Delia. Top border and side panels added by Patty.
  • Pinned into frame March 8, 2019. Quilting on long arm quilter March 11-23, 2019. (Patty).
  • Binding by Patty. Used a piece of plain, turquoise from Always Quilting store.  Binding turn down done by hand.
  • Like Boeing makes airplanes, this quilt is self-certified. QC by Patty!

,
To complete the design because there is no side border fabric at the top of the quilt and to apologize to Sharon for taking so long with her quilt, I made some pillow cases. I didn’t have enough fabric to make 2 pair, so I made 3 pillowcases! How lame is that?
