Where Dinosaurs Roam (Neonatal)

With the fabric left from Xavier's quilt (see "Where the Dinosaurs Roam" May 2017), I made a neonatal quilt to meet the goal of one neonatal quilt to donate. I didn't have a panel to use as a center, so I used one of the fabric prints as the center. I mitered the corners of the border print. Donated to quilt guild.
  • Size: 35" x 43" Neonatal size
  • Quilting: Quilted in a meandering free-form loop-de-loop pattern. 3 bobbins. Used variegated light blue to medium blue thread, King Tut 100% cotton thread, named "Aswan".  The quilter loved the cotton thread. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Matching fabric from fabric.com
  • Batting: 100% polyester batting from JoAnn's. Soft and Crafty, low loft. Used only 1 layer this time.
  • Binding:  Blue print fabric from fabric.com. Fabric coordinates with the geometric blue print in the panel and borders.
  • Pattern: "Koala Party" from a quilt made earlierPiecing by Patty.
  • Pinned and basted into frame June 28, 2017. Full float. Quilting on long arm quilter June 28, 2017. (Patty).
  • Binding by Patty.
  • QC by Spencer.

Forest Friends

The quilt I made for Tai Wah's first grandchild was a practical hit (see September 2015, "Sweet Dreams"). They kept it near the stroller and took it along when they strolled to the park to use as a ground cover for the baby to rest upon. I decided that Thomas, my first great nephew, needed an equally practical quilt. I used 2 layers of polyester batting, probably a mistake as 2 layers made quilting more difficult.  However, 2 layers makes a puffier, more padded quilt, so it will be a softer ground cover. I used a printed minky on the back and the front was pieced from 2 charm packs (precut 5" squares) called "Forest Friends".
  • Size: 41" x 46" Baby size
  • Quilting: Quilted in a free-form pattern. Quilted free form loose meandering stipple. 4 bobbins. Used variegated green to brown thread, Omni-V 100% polyester thread #9010, named "Multigrain".  Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Printed minky back purchased from fabric.com. Minky is printed with forest animals on a green background.
  • Batting: 100% polyester batting from JoAnn's. Soft and Crafty low loft. I used 2 layers! When will I learn?
  • Binding:  Dark green print fabric from a JoAnn's sale.
  • Pattern: Squares arranged in a diagonal pattern with a green border. Piecing by Patty.
  • Pinned and basted into frame June 26, 2017. Full float. Quilting on long arm quilter June 26, 2017. (Patty).

A Breed Apart

I made a whole cloth quilt for Cynthia. I conceived this one when she was under the weather, but with all the things going on at my parents' house, I didn't get it done until this summer. Cynthia likes golden retrievers and this quilt features a golden retriever print. While I quilted I listened to a "Summer of Love" playlist. The "Summer of Love" was 1967, 50 years ago, and the same summer we moved from Arizona to Redwood City. I was in high school and too distracted by my own trauma to notice what wad going on in San Francisco. I did have my dad bring home the Haight-Ashbury free paper (his office was in San Francisco) in an attempt to be "groovy". I was never groovy, not then or ever. Nevertheless, I thought the correct reading material would help my status. Sigh!
