Aunt Joyce’s Bandana Quilt

Aunt Joyce made a quilt out of bandannas printed with Native American designs. The quilt is for her granddaughter Rachel who has a barn decor for her house in Missouri. The back is the blue chambray fabric that Aunt Joyce sent for another quilt but I didn’t use because it has a heavier weight than the top. I agreed to use it this time. The chambray was bought to make curtains for her cabin but never used.

The thread kept breaking when I longarmed the top. I don’t know if it is due to 50/50 cotton/polyester bandannas or the heavier weight backing. So, I had to longarm very slowly. I think this quilt took more time than any I have ever quilted due to thread breakage and the huge size.
  • 110” x 110" king bed sized
  • Quilted in wide zigzags. The quilting is supposed to look like Native American mountain designs. Also, the quilting design looks like rickrack which Aunt Joyce once liked. Used dark gray thread “Dark Gray” Omni brand 100% polyester from Superior Threads. Free form quilting. 7 bobbins. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: 60” wide, blue chambray from Aunt Joyce
  • Batting: 100% cotton. “Request” from Quilter’s Dream, the thinnest loft of cotton battings.
  • Binding: Plain blue cotton fabric cut on the bias
  • Pattern: Bandannas sewed together
  • Piecing by Aunt Joyce
  • Pinned into frame April 2, 2024. Quilting on long arm quilter April 3-8, 2024. (Patty).
  • Binding by Patty
