Aunt Joyce’s Chocolate Diamonds

Aunt Joyce calls this quilt “Big Diamonds for Big Girls” but my name for it is more succinct. She made this quilt for her grandson Jonathan and his wife Rachael. Aunt Joyce made it on a foundation of yellow lined paper from a tablet like we used when we were kids. She used lots of different scraps for the blocks. The quilt is very attractive. Nevertheless, it had several problems, including places where the fabric did not catch in the seams and spots of fullness so the quilt was not flat. I mended spots where the seams were open and used the canned soup trick (see first photo) to hold in the fullness. The canned soup trick worked like a charm! The back, batting, and binding came from my inventory. The batting is 100% polyester, non-bearding as Aunt Joyce requested.
  • 83 3/4” x 93" queen-sized
  • Quilted in wavy designs in borders and followed diamond shapes in blocks. Loosely quilted. Used soup cans to hold in fullness. Used tan thread “Light Tan” Omni brand 100% polyester from Superior Threads. Free form quilting. 6 bobbins. The tension of the stitches on the back looks great, best I’ve ever done. Go figure! I made sewing machine tacks in the center of the diamonds. Quilting by Patty.
