Nancy’s Quilt-When the River Meets the Sea

Nancy and Rosalee
This quilt was made from John Lusk’s shirts. He died about 5 years ago. Gwen asked me to make the quilt for John’s mother, Nancy.  I quilted outlines of fish in the “sandwich” because John loved to fish. For that reason I think the title of the quilt should be “When the River Meets the Sea,” the Paul Williams song about the peaceful transition from life to death, sung by John Denver and the Muppets! However, I didn’t add a title to the label, so they can call the quilt whatever they wish. The blocks were cut 6 1/2” square and sewed with 3/8” seams because used fabric just won’t hold up like new fabric. Three of the blocks are pockets from the shirts. One of the blocks is the red polo man from the front of a shirt.  The back is flannel to make the quilt cozier.
  • Size: 58 3/4" x 70 1/2" Throw or lap size
  • Quilting: Quilted in a meandering medium stipple, vaguely like river currents with an occasional fish outline. I used blue variegated thread to enhance the idea of water currents. Free form quilting. 6 bobbins. Used Omni-V 100% polyester thread, #9006 named “Laguna” from Superior Threads. Thread is variegated blue turquouse, light turquoise, green. Quilting by Patty.
  • Backing: Light tan print flannel from Fabric.com. A wide back for quilts.
  • Batting: 100% cotton batting from Winline “Back to Basics”
  • Binding:  Plain khaki-colored cotton from my inventory. I choose a plain khaki binding to suggest khaki pants with which the shirts may have been worn. I did the second stitching on the binding by hand, the traditional, proper way to do bindings. Bindings look better done properly and this quilt needs all the help it can get!
  • Pattern:  A traditional pattern using square blocks arranged on a diagonal. Piecing by Patty.
  • Pinned into frame March 5, 2018. Quilting on long arm quilter March 7-9, 2018. (Patty).
  • Binding by Patty.
  • QC by Spencer.
