Red and Blue Plaid Comfort

Exhausted from the stress of QC work!

This is the sixth in our wool comfort project. It is a red textured wool with a blue, gray and red plaid on each end. We did this comfort to pass the time while the long arm was broken.
We sent this one to the Oklahoma Tornado Victims.

Ambuya's Garden

This is the second (and last) of Angela's mother's quilts made from drapery and upholstery samples. Angela told me once that 'ambuya' means 'grandmother' in her language. This quilt also qualifies as meeting one of the UFO goals for 2013.
This quilt was a bit harder to prepare for quilting. A lot of the paper did not wash off the fabric, so I had to scrape some of it off and wash and iron the top again. Some of the squares were a bit puckery and tricky to quilt. One side of the quilt was 4 inches longer than the other side, so I had to trim it a bit to make it easier to mount in the long arm. I also mended some of the holes on the backside of the top with muslin and the adhesive used for appliqué in the same manner as I did the first one.
The final blow with this top was that the long arm broke on Monday 2/4/13, when I was only half done with the top. It started running 'wild' (uncontrollably). Keith and Miff were visiting so Keith called Nolting in Iowa and serviceman Dan said we needed a new equalizer control board. He blamed static electricity, but I think it's my electric personality that caused the breakdown. Dan sent us a refurbished board (considerably cheaper than a new one-- $350 compared to $1200), but for over a week we had to find other things to do. It was a depressing week. The part arrived on Tuesday 2/12/13, so on Wednesday 2/1313, I called Dan and he walked me through the install and reprogramming. All went well and I was able to finish the quilting on Wednesday. Back in business with the added precaution of using spray 'static guard' during dry weather. Lessons learned!
Size: 66" x 82" Single-Bed Size
Quilting: Loopy design using light blue polyester thread (Omni from Superior Threads-named "Harbor Sky"). Free form quilting. 6 bobbins.
Backing: Dark blue-colored background with small flower print from Connecting Threads.
Batting: 100% Polyester (Hobbs)
Binding: Same cotton print used on the back
Pattern: Squares randomly selected for the quilt. 6 x 7 or 8 squares on the top. The random placement of the squares is the real charm of the quilt.
